This was a special workshop held only for the teachers, staff and students of St. Ann’s School in Quelossim.
The audience (around 100 people) was eager to learn especially how to convert waste into wealth.
Since the students were also present, Nalini conducted a game where they learnt to segregate waste in a fun way.
The resource people present were: Yoguita Mehra from Green Essentials, Tallulah D’Silva from Mission Green Goa, Prerna Pawaskar from waste Wise Foundation and Jayesh Raut who spoke on behalf of Communicare Trust giving some ideas on how to deal with waste.
Our workshop in Quepem was a wonderful success. It was held at the Pope John XXIII HSS in collaboration with the Don Bosco College of Agriculture Sulcorna Goa. We had around 90 teachers in attendance and their excitement and eagerness to learn was palpable. Our wonderful resource people spoke to our participants on the ways and means of waste management, with the base principles of re-use and recycle. The resource people who formed the panel of speakers included Dr. Cassie Rodrigues. Principal in Charge of Don Bosco’s College of Agriculture Sulcorna,Dr. Miguel Braganza, Assistant Professor of Horticulture at Don Bosco’s College of Agriculture Sulcorna ,Ms. Tallulah Silva Mission Green Goa , Nalini Elvino de Sousa from Communicare Trust who spoke about the Magic Box, Yogita Mehra from Green Essentials and Natasha Fernandes with Aira and Milan from Naree Artisans Movement.
Participants were given booklets, written and published by Communicare Trust, detailing all the activities the schools can implement for waste management. In participating in our workshop the schools are now in a competition, to be organized by Communicare Trust with participants from all the Talukas where we will be holding more such workshops, for yearend Best Practices Prizes for the best schools in each Taluka as well as over all prizes in each category. The schools are also given a chance to join our Waste Management communities where they can confer with each other on how their processes are progressing and how to solve problems that may come up. We look forward to a wonderful year of working with them and educating them in the area of Waste Management. We hope they enjoyed participating as much as we did organizing. Looking forward to seeing them inculcate these ideas in the little minds of their students who will soon lead us to a better future.
After the success of the Government Primary Teachers workshop conducted at Rosary College Navelim, Communicare Trust was invited by the college Administration to conduct the same one for the students of its Geography Department on the 18th of January 2016.
The workshop was named: The 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
71 students attended the workshop. In her address, the Chief Guest, Nalini Elvino de Sousa, manager of Communicare Trust, said that taking responsibility and measures to spread awareness related to waste management in the need of the hour. The principal Rev. Dr. Simão R. Diniz stressed upon creating a generation of students agents to spread awareness about the importance of waste management. The resource persons who conducted the sessions were Yogita Mehra, Prerna Pawaskar and Natacha Fernandes.
Yogita conducted a demonstration and practice session on waste segregation and kitchen gardening insisting on “Khamba” – a portable kitchen composting unit, for decomposing the biodegradable waste generated in kitchen. Prerna gave
Practical instances where through community intervention plastic waste segregation is successfully carried out in parts of Goa. Finally Natacha Fernandes and her team conducted a session in which students made innovative paper quilling using old newspapers.
This workshop was supported by the Lions Club of Bicholim who arranged us the hall- Hirabai Zantye Memorial Hall, the audio-visual equipment and took care of the refreshments.
Mr. Sanjeev Kadkade, from Lions Club Bicholim addressed the gathering followed by Nalini Elvino de Sousa – manager of Communicare Trust, Tallulah D’Silva from Mission Green Goa, Yoguita Mehra from Green Essentials and the team from Naree Artisan movement who had a practical session with the teachers.
Mr. Rohit Zantye, president of Lions Club Bicholim, distributed the certificates to all the participants.
On the 1st of September we had our Waste Management Workshop for Primary School teachers of Bardez Taluka . On our panel of speakers we had our Trustee Mr.Sushant Figueiredo who spoke about Green Building projects as well as the Dry Waste Treatment plant in Saligao. We also had Aira Mirchandani from Naree Artisans Movement who conducted a practical session with the teachers. The teachers creativity was seen in the several home décor items— Photo frames, Napkin holders and pencil stands created out of paper. The teachers were eager to implement the Waste Management techniques they learned at the workshop. About 47 teachers participated in the event. IHM Goa and it’s administration provided us with the support. We hope to have the teachers implement the techniques and take part in our competition scheduled to be held at the end of the academic year.
